From conducting flight safety investigations and educating pilots on potential safety threats to implementing medical programs and helping prevent employee injuries, our team is instrumental in running a safe and successful airline for our customers and employees.
Job overview and responsibilities
This leader is responsible for oversight of occupational health and safety activities across all divisions operating within the United Kingdom (UK). As the primary competent person at United for UK operations, the leader will assist the business with complying with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and all other applicable local occupational health and safety requirements by developing UK-specific standards, policies, and guidance as needed for all UK operating divisions in alignment with United’s global safety standards. The individual is responsible for ensuring risk assessments and safety audits of UK operations against applicable regulatory requirements and corporate standards as an individual or as a part of an assigned team. Responsible for analyzing safety performance trends within the UK, supporting the oversight of root cause analysis, and partnering with local station management and suppliers to develop action plans and enforce health and safety compliance. Provides assistance and consultation to UK and US leadership on issues related to occupational health and safety. The leader must have a proven track record for decisive actions backed by strategic planning, continuous improvement, analytical thinking, goal directed leadership and service-oriented performance. This leader will deliver results through leadership, direction, alignment and motivation.
- Acts as the primary competent person for occupational health and safety compliance within the UK
- Oversees United’s compliance with occupational safety and health compliance program requirements across all operations within the UK (e.g.,
- Airport Operations, Technical Operations, Inflight, Cargo, Ground Support, Facilities, Vendor Management and Flight Operations)
- Ensure UK station are compliant to HSE code and United standards
- Establishing a comprehensive dashboard for measuring the station health on safety using proactive, predictive and
reactive metrics to shape and influence continuous improvement - Conducts on-site risk assessments and health and safety compliance assessments of UK facilities to identify risks and
validate work place hazard corrective actions making recommendations to correct/prevent identified health and safetyissues in conjunction with operating division staff which are part of our competent personnel network - Coordinates with local leadership in achieving all levels of the Safety Excellence Program
- Monitors trends in reporting system, accident and incident reports, implementation of corrective or preventative action as required
- Has in-depth knowledge of Safety Management System (SMS) and local Safety requirements i.e. HSE and all other applicable occupational health and safety requirements, providing guidance and assistance to local leadership on health and safety related compliance matters with outside regulatory agencies
- Provides guidance and assistance ensuring to operating division management that all lost time employee injuries are investigated by local leadership, assuring each case goes before a Safety Review Board identifying root cause and preventative actions to be implemented to avoid repeats
- Assists department heads and administrators in enforcing UK and local site health and safety regulations and codes
- Drive and support a safety culture of being proactive with all site management
- Drives health and safety compliance improvement through data collection and trending
- Attends local health and safety meetings
- Assists local leadership with health and safety promotion initiatives
QualificationsWhat’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelors degree
- NEBOSH qualification or related work experience
- Safety Certified credentials and/or including Continuous Improvement (Green or Black Belt) qualifications
- Significant leadership experience in an occupational health and safety role
- Strong knowledge of airline operations which includes customer service, ramp operations and business acumen
- Motivated and self-managed individual that has demonstrated leadership capability in a multi-operational division
- Proven leadership skills promoting a culture of safety and compliance
- Effective leadership skills in developing and directing a high performing team
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products and applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Travel up to 20 of the time required
- Must be eligible to live and work in United Kingdom for any employer without work sponsorship
- Regular attendance and punctuality in accordance with Uniteds policies is required
- Attendance is required at work location
